Preparing a Proposal

Claim: Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are changing the way we communicate in a positive way.

Reasons: Although some critics argue that Facebook and Twitter have a negative impact in today’s world, I believe the social networking sites keep people connected and provide a strong network in the social and business realm. It has transformed the world of advertising, businesses, and social media. Not only are Facebook and Twitter entertaining, they keep many people connected with old and new friends. The sites also make us feel more connected with celebrity culture. “Tweeting”, “Facebooking” have become common terms for many people. As long as one is smart and careful about what they post on the web, social networking is changing our world for the better.
Warrant: Social networking is something most do everyday and it comes with both positive and negative consequences.
This issue deserves attention because nearly everyone has a Facebook and/or Twitter today. Almost every website is connected to a social networking site so the user can “like” or “tweet” the article. Overall, the internet and our lives have evolved to cater around social networking.
I hope to reach anyone who has a Facebook or Twitter and is interested in the effects social networking has on our world. I assume my target audiences would be younger people, probably 16-25 year olds, but it could be people of all ages.
I might have challenges defending my thesis since some people believe that social networking is all about the “me” factor and is ruining our society. Many people argue that our generation is too obsessed and wastes time on social networking sites.
I will research articles referencing Twitter and Facebook and their impact on society. I will also analyze the celebrity presence in both of the sites and how they differ and are similar. I will probably analyze one celebrity’s Twitter and Facebook page in order to research both types of sites effectively.
I will format my paper in the form of either a magazine article or blog. Probably a magazine article so it will be a bit more formal than a blog, but not as formal as a conventional research essay.
