The first twitter I decided to examine was Chelsea Handler's. She is a popular comedian on TV, and her Twitter definitely reflects that. Handler's personality is evident in her tweets, which leads the audience to believe they are authentic. She appeals to her audience through humor and seems to have no filter. Her background is a somewhat provocative picture of her- again coinciding with her "no filter" personality. The tweets usually are full of sarcasm and often times linked with a photo. This tends to keep followers more engaged rather than just a text tweet. Handler also helps promote her follow colleagues in her tweets, as well as other organizations she wishes to promote.
The second twitter I chose was Justin Bieber's. This page is always stocked with crazy fans tweeting at him, usually indicating their longing to meet Justin. Bieber's tweets do a lot of self-promoting, but he also mixes in tweets about his daily life, and a lot of thanking of his fans. Pathos is definitely used through Bieber's twitter to allow his fans to feel loved by him through his "I love yall!" tweets. Kairos is also an important strategy in promoting his upcoming performances. Bieber's tweets definitely seem genuine, and he takes the time to frequently post links for his viewers to see.
The age difference in these two individuals probably contributes to some of the differences among their twitters. Handler is much older than Bieber, therefore the humor represented on her page is somewhat more mature and often sexual in nature. Bieber seems to be more interested in staying connected with his adoring fans, as well as keeping in touch with close friends. Both do some promoting through their tweets, but Bieber's is definitely more self-directed. These two celebrities also seem to be rather active on their twitters judging by the amount of tweets and links they post.
Social media, especially Twitter, is a great way to stay "in the know" and to keep up with the pop culture world. Twitter seems to be a safe way for celebrities to communicate with their fans without the risk of being mobbed. It's also a convenient and effective way for celebrities to gain credibility among their fans, as well as communicate with other people of their social status. Of course, there are those that can become consumed with social media, and even lose their identity to observing others. There's no doubt most Americans enjoy hearing about celebrity culture, so it will continue to thrive. Twitter has just made it easier for us to access it!

  1. I liked how different your celebrities are. And how the pages for each celebrity makes sense. It's going to be weird when the Bieb's makes the transition from boy to man, or is social media going to make that transition easier?
