Celebrities and Social Media

Rihanna seems to maintain her own personal Twitter. Most of the time Rihanna addresses her followers as her “fans”, “u guys”, or “Rihanna Navy”. Rihanna’s diction is very raw and unedited. She misspells words, uses improper grammar, and swears often. Rihanna’s tweets often contain personal information. For example, in one of her tweets she discusses her grandmother’s funny habits, and in another she declares how much she misses her mother.  Rihanna’s Twitter shows so many different sides of her sometimes she is angry, nice, sarcastic, flirtatious, funny. All of these different sides make her seem human, and her followers are able to feel involved in her life. She often addresses other celebrities, such as her best friend Katy Perry, but she also often addresses her fans. At times her Twitter can make her ethos questionable, because it is so raw and uncensored.  However the raw and uncensored aspect is a type of pathos. Her tweets make you angry, laugh, and sometimes even reminisce about childhood. The look of her Twitter does not really represent her persona to me; it just promotes her album. Her past Twitter backgrounds have been really creative in the past however, and I believe they match her persona. The past background shave included  things such as clothes, shoes, and abstract drawings.

Britney Spears' Twitter seems to be the complete opposite of Rihanna’s Twitter. It is way less personal and seems to be maintained by her handlers. Sometimes her tweets are even signed by her manager; I guess this is supposed to make her followers feel like her Twitter is actually maintained by her, but it is very obvious it is not. Her Twitter only promotes upcoming shows, song, and appearances. Sometimes she blesses her followers with a Britney signature quote, but that is all she gives her followers. Her persona never changes; she always has witty, sharp, businesswoman type tweets. She never tweets personal information. Everything is always spelled correctly; I couldn’t even find any grammar errors. Yet, Brittany has just as many followers as Rihanna. The look of her Twitter is not very original either; she, of course, is promoting her album.

Rihanna promotes herself on her Twitter also, but she is way more subtle about it.  Britney and Rihanna both use kairos to their advantage though. Right after a show/appearance, they tweet about it, which reminds the fans and keeps the performance on their minds. Another interesting thing about both blogs is the fact that they both address what the media is currently saying. For example, Rihanna personally tweets gossip columnist, confronting them about their stories. Brittany posts links to some tabloids and talks about how ridiculous they are. Although both are very different, they pretty much accomplish the same things. Both Twitters’ inform fans about what is going on in their lives, and promote their careers.

Today’s social media seems to be what drives celebrity culture. Celebrities stay connected to fans through social media, and the public can stay informed about celebrities through social media. Most celebrity controversy occurs through social media, and celebrities use this medium to their advantage. Social media makes the public feel personally involved in celebrities’ lives, and since celebrities know everyone’s watching, they put on a show. It really is their life, our entertainment.
