Claim: Children are being exposed to movies and television shows that far exceed their age, making them mature at a more rapid rate.
Reasons: PG movies and television shows contain content of that of a PG-13 production, PG-13 movies have incredibly inappropriate R rated scenes in it, and R rated movies air content that should be forbidden from all eyes. Screenwriters, movie directors, and producers are encouraging and permitting the publication of mature, and to some degree vulgar productions because people are interested and they sell.
Warrant: In this day in age, movies and television shows get so much publicity, that virtually everyone, at every age watches them.
This issue deserves attention because viewers look up to the actors and actresses in the productions; they aspire to be just like them. As a result, their actions and behavior is seen as acceptable and admirable to the public, causing everyday children, teens, and adults to mimic what they see on TV. Today, younger kids see underage drinking, sex, nudity and violence as harmless due to what they see on aired in theaters and on TV.
I hope to reach parents who allow their children to freely watch television and movies. Children don’t know the difference between right in wrong if they have never been taught it, so parents would be my target audience.
It may be difficult defending my thesis because some people may believe that mature shows prepare people for what they will be exposed to in the real world. Some people don’t want to “shelter” their children too much because they fear this could cause rebellion or other problems later in life.
I’m going to look at sights that explain why parents should not bring or allow their children to watch inappropriate movies or shows. Also, I am going to research analyze various movies that seem to be far too advanced for their audience. For example, Jaws, Gremlins, The Ring 2, The Breakup, Coyote Ugly, and Titanic. In order to get concrete evidence, I am going to use both the Internet for articles (blogs, magazine articles, newspaper articles), and search the library for any books on the subject.
My paper will be casually formatted, made to appear on a blog or in a magazine. Although I am going to get evidence to back my claim up, I am going to use a lot of my opinion.
