The first celebrity I found on twitter is comedian Dane Cook. He posts a few times a day, and a lot of the time his twitter posts are the same as his facebook status updates so both pages are similar. Many of his twitter post have an aspect of his comedy in them. He likes to make inappropriate jokes, which is a lot like his stand-up comedy. What is unexpected about his posts is there are some serious messages he likes to send to his followers. In one post he says “Your next big move might be staying still” which can be considered words of wisdom but in another post he makes a joke about sending explicit photos. It appears that Dane himself is posting these tweets because there is a personal aspect to some of them. I’ve been following Dane for a while and while he jokes around majority of the time, he also will post about his family and his friends and how much he cares for them. Dane is obviously using humor as a pathetic appeal to talk to his audience because his job is to be funny. His audience on twitter is similar to a live audience he performs for in comedy clubs and arenas.
The second celebrity I found on twitter is Vinny from MTV’s Jersey Shore. I recently started following Vinny on twitter, but his posts are usually entertaining. Vinnny likes to use his twitter to show love to his favorite sports teams, especially the New York Knicks. He also communicates with Pauly, Snookie, and Deena from the show also and they appear to be personal messages from the real Vinny to the other roommates from Jersey. While Vinny might not be a credible person to some, he has acknowledged many times that he likes to keep it real. He tells his followers whatever is on his mind and doesn’t want to be fake or deal with fake people. Both celebrities try to bring humor into their twitter posts, but they also share their pearls of wisdom whenever they can. Vinny promotes himself a little more than Dane does. Whenever his show is coming on or he made an appearance on another program, he will tweet and re-tweet all day for his followers to watch his show. He’s definitely trying to gain as much exposure as possible. On the other hand, Dane is already very successful and well known for his comedy that he posts more funny updates rather than self-promoting posts.
Social media is becoming increasingly popular and it’s almost necessary for a celebrity to get on the bandwagon or fade into obscurity. It’s an easy way for celebrities to connect with their fans and also to send out information in an instant and as a culture we expect everything at an instant. Fans also feel closer to their favorite celebrity when they can follow their every move via Twitter and Facebook, and it’s easy for celebrities to give a quick shout out to all of their fans on the internet.
