Claim: America is obsessed with young rap musicians who display little musical proficiency and a lot of swagger
Reasons: Many of today's rappers such as Lil B and Soulja boy have risen to popularity by way of cheap gimmicks and amateur musical production. They are not glorified as musicians, but held on a different pedestal as 'rap artists.' This pedestal allows them to shine in the lime light, sign record contracts and jet set across the world based on personal charm and image. America's youth eats these images up, with rap sales increasing and new rap artists with less than impressive styles appearing everyday.
My audience will be 18-30 year old, music savvy internet surfers who read media sources such as Pitchfork, Gorilla vs Bear and Gawker. I think the topic is relevant because rap music has had a huge impact on the world in the past 20 years. Uninspired rap music has the ability to have an undesirable effect on society in the future.
Finding neutral sources is more unlikely than anything, but hey why not give it a shot? I will research blogs and scour the internet for juicy opinions on the subject.
