Preparing a Proposal

Claim: Rebecca Black’s “Friday” is a hit song.
Reason(s): Most people are making a mockery of this song, but the song continues to be a daily hot topic. Everyone knows the lyrics, the video has millions of views, and Rebecca Black is receiving tons of publicity. Even if the song is terrible, it still has all the characteristics of a hit song.

Warrant(s): My criteria for a hit song includes:
-Catchy Lyrics
-Popularity
-Spawns Imitators
- A lot of radio play
-Hot topic
-Viral Video
-Artist gains ton publicity for the song

§  This song deserves attention because everyone seems to be talking about how terrible this song is, yet the song has all of our attention. Everyone is talking about it, and everyone knows the lyrics. Rebecca Black has been featured on many shows since the song was released and now she is in the process of making an entire album.
§  My target audience is very general. I could address everyone who listens to music/ pop, or I could address music critics.

§   Defending this song may be difficult, because so many music critics agree that this song is terrible. When this song is discussed, most people either laugh or frown in disgust.
§  My research will include discussing the song with friends/ family, finding out about the song’s amount of radio play, viewing stats about views/listens, and finding out what Rebecca Black will do next. I could discuss past songs that are also considered terrible, but were hits. I could also compare and contrast the song to well known- hits.

§  I am considering more than one format currently. I want to do either a personal blog post or a music review.
