Rhetoric of Celebrity - Spring 2011: Paraphrase:

Nugent, Benjamin. "About Tom," Time. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1002716,00.html, 22 June 2002. Web. 31 Jan. 2011.

Original Text:
"The conversation has wound down...He doesn't shake hands--he hugs you goodbye and laughs...He has been a perfect host, a forthcoming interview, unfailingly cordial. As you are driving away, you feel that you know him; that you have seen at least some of the man behind the curtain. But as the guard closes the gate behind you, and the house recedes into the distance, you realize that he never invited you inside."

Despite his undeniable celebrity, Tom Cruise manages to put Nugent at ease thanks to his candor and easy-going personality. However, soon after the conclusion of their interview in which Cruise was seemingly honest, Nugent begins to question their conversation entirely. He toys with the idea that Cruise knows how to play the interview game by answering questions without ever actually saying anything.

  1. I think you did a really good job of explaining the meaning of this quote and it's significance in a comprehensive. The way you explain the quote makes it much easier for the reader to have insight into the original article without reading it. I think the quote is very powerful, though, so my suggestion would be to put both the quote and your explanation in your paper.
