I am ashamed to say that I dabble in celebrity culture daily. It has become a part of my daily routine to find out about the latest celebrity gossip. The trending topics about celebrities on Yahoo’s homepage, celebrities’ tweets on Twitter, and gossip blogs all grasp my attention. The article “Seeing by Starlight: Celebrity Obsession” really explained this need I have to be informed about the latest celebrity news. I am simply curious about the alternate reality that celebrities seem to live in. The lights and glamour blind me, causing me to forget that celebrities live on the same planet as I do.
In the VF article “Adrift…” Lindsay Lohan is portrayed as a victim of the public spotlight. According to Lohan she was simply living her “college years but in the public eye”; she seems to have an excuse for all of her wrong actions, and although she repeatedly says she is not making excuses for her actions, in actuality she is. In the article’s photographs she is depicted as a smiling American beauty that has not a care in the world. This image is odd and quite opposite of the raunchy, drug and alcohol addicted, wild woman that the media depicts her as. This article seems to be an attempt to shed some positive light onto a lost golden girl in a very dark place, but at the same time it makes a mockery of her character. The article repeatedly mentions the many times that Lohan promised to change her ways, and it also includes a lot of the negativity that seems to be consuming Lohan’s life.
