Celebrities are part of my everyday life. Well, let me rephrase that…I make celebrities part of my everyday life- sports stars, actors and actress’, politicians, musicians, models, business executives etc. I read about them, talk about them, emulate them, and poke fun at them. The article “Seeing by Starlight: Celebrity Obsession,” justifies these actions. The article states, “Celebrities are fascinating because they live in a parallel universe.” This parallel universe that appears to be so close, yet, so far away allows our minds to drift into another world, distracting one from the anxieties of his or her own life. It is easy to make “relationships” with celebrities because we feel so involved and connected to their daily lives, in large part due to their intense media coverage. As a result, we are led to think they are our friends, lovers, and motivators. It makes sense that we have this fascination with celebrities because it allows us to relate our lives to the “glamorous” life of the rich and the famous (especially when they fail)! We use the lives of celebrities to make our lives more interesting and connect to others.

The Vanity Fair article “Adrift…” portrays Lindsey Lohan both as a victim and a culprit of the spotlight. The article suggests she is a victim of the public eye and culprit of abusing her fame. The star is seen as a victim as she explains she is simply “living her college years,” making the “mistakes” all college student make. However, unlike most college students, her mistakes are visible to the public, making her an easy target. She takes responsibility for her actions, but denies all allegations of addiction problems. Lohan is a seen as the culprit by using her money and fame to get what she wants and avoid the law. Lindsey emerges from the article as a girl full of potential but completely lost in both her personal and public lives. Although the young star has received help for her problems, her fame and “obligations” as a star has created a continuous vicious cycle for Lohan.
