According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “pastiche” is used as a noun or an adjective to describe a novel, poem, painting, etc., incorporating several different styles, or made up of parts drawn from a variety of sources.
Upon reading this definition, I immediately thought of mash-ups. A mash-up is a song created by blending more than one pre-recorded song together, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another. Lots of times, completely different styles of music and different tones are mashed together to create one composition.
The TV show Glee, had an episode titled “Mash-up.” In one song featured on the show, the boys sang a song that girls traditionally sang and the girls sang a song that males generally performed. I believe this served as a pastiche because different styles of music from various sources were drawn together to create a single piece of work. This type of art proves that you can take anything, even something that has already been created or produced, and make it your own.
