The article makes perfect sense, but I guess I’ve never taken the time to think of the strong association between politics and celebrities. It’s interesting to think that this is not a new trend, but that it has been going on for decades now. Celebrities can be found being involved in all sorts of political activities. Campaigning could be as simple as having their picture taken, to having a sticker on an article of clothing, or just saying one or two words. Politicians are much like celebrities because they are always having to “act.” There are always eyes watching celebrities and politicians alike. They are very conscience of their actions and what comes out of their mouth because one wrong move could turn the audience away.
Typically, rock music can be associated with rebellion. In political terms, the link between rock music and politics usually comes from the citizens of the nation who are unhappy. It is usually used when the population strongly disagrees with the choices within politics. I know that when I think about rock music and rebellion it takes me back to the “hippy” years. That also leads me to think about Nixon and all the shady business that took place back then. Even though I was not around during that time, I think that this is something that has been brought up not only through history classes but something that can be seen through recent movies as well. Some of the movies are spoofs while some of the movies are more serious. Gossip journalism is something that came up during the same time period as the Nixon presidency as a way to reveal and re assess the presidents to make sure that they were doing their job. It first came around when it was revealed that a president had lied.
I would think that presidents know that when they run for presidency, that they are at the starting stages of becoming a celebrity. They will be followed around everywhere and people will start to know of them even if they don’t know everything about them. Their face, at the least will be recognized. In addition, presidents have to act like celebrities in the way that they have to get as many people as they can on board. They are trying to win people over. So while I know that political figures have to be careful about their image, I will be more careful to notice their intentions behind their actions to see in which ways the actions serve to benefit them.
