Hi all,
As I write this, the news outlets are bursting with the story of a NY congressman's resignation over some saucy internet photos. Next week, we'll extend our discussions of scandal, celebrity, and rhetorical appeals to the political arena. In order to prepare for that, I'd like you to complete a blog post using the following as your prompt:
In what political activities are celebrities involved? In what ways do politicians act like celebrities? What is the relationship between rock music and political causes? What is the relationship between what West and Orman (one of your readings) call “gossip journalism” and political figures? Does the cult of celebrity present a problem for American politics and, ultimately, American government? How?
Post your thoughts on some of these questions (200-500 words). You may respond using a combination of information provided by the readings and your own experience. Feel free to link to articles, videos, etc. that you think are relevant.
I look forward to our discussion!
