Today, the boundary between celebrities and politicians does not really exist. Celebrities are consistently dabbling into politics, and celebrities are often forced to share their spotlight with politicians. Since both politicians and celebrities are placed upon a pedestal, it is not very surprising that the dividing lines are starting to blur.
For example, President Barack Obama used his celebrity to gain an advantage in the 2008 Presidential Election. Being the first African-American presidential candidate and placing “hope” into everyone’s lives/hearts, gained President Obama tons of publicity. He appeared on magazine covers such as Rolling Stone, Essence, People, Vanity Fair, and even GQ. President Obama also made television appearances, and his face was featured on countless products. His celebrity played an important role in the election. In my opinion, the cult of celebrity presents a major problem for American politics and government. The world of celebrity is not reality at all; it is all a show put on for the public. Politics are supposed to be about real problems and issues, but if celebrity is mixed in, politics become unreal just as the world of celebrity. The issues will slowly start to not matter, and image will become the only concern.
