Celebrity Politics

Celebrities and politicians are very similar and in some ways the exact same thing. In a time when anyone can post an opinion on the internet, keeping a squeaky clean image is everything to a politician. If racy internet photos appear, then that politician’s credibility is shattered and they can kiss an election goodbye. Everyone has a past, and everyone can find out about it in the instant information age. Politicians feel the need to get their name and face out in the public view during elections must like a movie start promoting a movie. A candidate has to look good at all times, speak well in every situation and never ever make a mistake. They are under a microscope at all times.
Celebrities use their name and image to promote politicians that they feel strongly about. Many think they can use their fame for a good cause by backing a certain person or political party in hopes that those who aren’t involved in politics will vote in their favor if those people are fans of a celebrity’s work.
The cult of celebrity can present a problem because those that are involved in politics might not take a celebrity’s involvement seriously. When shameless reality television “stars” Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were showing their support for presidential candidate John McCain, some people felt that it hurt the republican candidate’s image because Spencer and Heidi aren’t the best role models to follow so why would young people vote the same as them?
Having a famous last name can also be a problem in politics. When a Kennedy takes office, there are certain expectations for greatness from them because of the legacy of their last name. If a Kennedy fails, the feels the need to punish them more severely than a politician named Moore or Jones.
