Rhetorical analysis - tabloids

Choose one of the items included in your “tabloid packet” or select a similar article that interests you. If the article is available online, provide a link. You may use the following questions as a guide to help you analyze the rhetoric of the piece you choose. This analysis should take the form of a few developed paragraphs.

1. Who is the audience for this magazine or media source?

2. Relate the appearance of this article to kairos.

3. Summarize the “argument” of the article.

4. What specific emotions are targeted by the article? How?

5. What is the relationship between text and image? How do the two work together to maximize a particular effect?

6. What words are used in the headline? Why is that significant? What is the
relationship between typography (the appearance of the text) and how the reader
perceives the argument that is being made?

7. Look at what other word choices are used elsewhere in the text. Which ones are particularly striking?

8. What sources are used in the article? Are those sources credible? What kind of logic is used?

9. What effect overall does this have on the celebrity’s persona?

10. Sadly, your “tabloid packet” is black-and-white. (I would love to make you all color copies, but neither the department nor I can afford it.) Go to the website for a tabloid of your choice. What colors are prominent? How is the use of color
adapted for a particular audience?

11. Continue looking at the tabloid’s website. What advertisements do you see? Why is this significant in terms of audience?
